Use lights that have been tested and approved by a reputable testing lab to ensure they meet safety standards.Discard any lights that have any damage such as frayed wires or broken bulbs.

Keep extention cords away from high traffic areas to avoid tripping hazards.

Make sure if you use a ladder to hand your lights that the ladder is on even ground with all four legs firmly in place and do not stand on the top shelf.

Remember to turn off your lights during the day or when you are away from home.

Do not put nails or tacks through the wiring when hanging your lights.

Do not overload your outlets when plugging in lights.

For added electric-shock protection, plug outdoor electric lights and decorations into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). Portable outdoor GFCIs can be purchased where electrical supplies are sold. GFCIs can be installed permanently to household circuits by a qualified electrician.
