It’s never a good feeling to find water where it shouldn’t be. For this Huron homeowner, it started with a soft spot in the kitchen floor near the refrigerator. When they pulled the fridge away from the wall, the source was obvious: a failing supply line had been leaking behind the unit, quietly sending water into places nobody could see. By the time they caught it, moisture had traveled from the kitchen through the garage entry, into the laundry room, and all the way down into the finished basement. They called our team for emergency water damage cleanup, and we headed out.

What We Found When We Arrived

The kitchen floor had that telltale give to it, soft and slightly warped near the fridge. But the real story was happening underneath and beyond. Our technicians pulled out the thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to trace exactly how far the water had traveled. What looked like a kitchen problem on the surface turned out to be a multi-room situation.

Thermal scans of the garage entry lit up with temperature variations that mapped the water’s path through the wall cavities and subfloor. The laundry room had absorbed moisture as well. Downstairs, the basement bar area, living room walls, and flooring all showed elevated readings. According to IICRC S500 standards, quick response to Category 1 water like a supply line leak is critical because clean water can become contaminated within 48 to 72 hours if left sitting.

Setting Up the Kitchen Dry-Out

The kitchen was ground zero. Rather than tearing out all the flooring right away, we placed drying mats directly on the surface to pull moisture from underneath. Air movers kept constant circulation going around the mats. This approach works well when the water hasn’t been sitting for too long, and it can save a homeowner from a full flooring replacement if the materials respond to drying.

We also brought in additional equipment to focus on the subfloor around where the fridge had been sitting. That area had taken the heaviest saturation since it was closest to the leaking supply line.

Containing and Drying the Garage Entry and Laundry Room

Water doesn’t stop at room boundaries. The garage entry had taken on moisture in both the walls and the subfloor, and the laundry room was in a similar state. We set up containment barriers in the laundry room to isolate the drying zone and prevent the rest of the home’s airflow from interfering with the process. Containment makes a real difference in how quickly and efficiently we can bring moisture levels down.

The garage entry got its own targeted drying setup along the walls and floor. Our team positioned air movers at angles designed to push humid air off the surfaces and toward the dehumidifiers.

Tackling the Basement

The basement required the most work. Water had migrated down from the kitchen level and affected the bar area, the living room, and wall sections along the perimeter. We installed containment barriers, positioned commercial-grade air movers at strategic angles, and ran dehumidifiers around the clock. Every day our team came back to take new moisture readings and adjust equipment placement as the drying progressed.

Basements are tricky. They have fewer natural air exchanges than the rest of the house, so moisture lingers longer. Materials absorb water faster than they release it. That’s exactly why professional monitoring matters and why guessing doesn’t cut it.

Why Fridge Leaks Deserve a Faster Response Than Most People Think

Refrigerator leaks are one of the more common water damage calls we see. The supply line sits behind the unit where nobody looks, and a small pinhole leak can drip for weeks before anyone notices. By that point, moisture has traveled through subflooring and wall cavities into rooms you wouldn’t expect.

The EPA warns that mold can begin growing on damp materials within 24 to 48 hours, which is why speed matters. A few things worth keeping in mind:

  • Water supply lines can develop slow leaks that go undetected for a long time
  • Kitchens sit directly above basements in many Ohio homes, making vertical water migration common
  • Soft or spongy flooring near the fridge is usually the first sign something’s wrong
  • Slow leaks create the kind of prolonged moisture exposure that leads to mold growth if left unaddressed
